about

The Mezzo Soprano Marianne Lihannah sings Gurney's 'Desire in Spring' live as part of her ATCL Singing Recital for Trinity College London. Pete Rosser is the Pianist.
‘Desire in Spring’
Gurney wrote this song while walking in his beloved English countryside, with friends in Cornwall, after a long spell of depression – where he had contemplated taking his own life.
The words – by Francis Ledwidge – tell how the poet sits by the water and re-lives passionate memories of nature and birdsong.
Being a wonderful poet as well – he realized that English poetry can’t be forced into German, French or Russian musical formulas, as in previous ages.
Gurney never ceased from the attempt to make English music what it should be. He had found an exact musical equivalent to the poetry that fitted the beautiful landscape of England.
