about

This is a live recording from the mezzo soprano Marianne Lihannah's ATCL diploma concert in singing from Trinity College London. She is accompanied by the pianist Pete Rosser.
‘To Joy’ is from the Song Cycle, 'Oh Fair to See'.
This song was from the period of Finzi’s life where he set any poem to music with his wife’s name; ‘Joy’ in it. However ‘To Joy’ is a far from happy song. It is a sad and moving story of the poet Edmund Blunden’s baby, also called ‘Joy’, who was lost to death. One can hear in this magnificent song, a wintry landscape of the soul. “I like music to grow out of the actual words and not be fitted to them” – Finzi wrote to his friend Edmund Blunden.
