'Canon in D' by Johann Pachelbel (1653-1707)
'Canon in D' is Pachelbel's most famous composition. It combines the techniques of both a Canon (a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence) and a ground bass, which Pachelbel skillfully constructs to make it both pleasing and subtly undetectable. It was originally scored for three violins and bass continuo and paired with a Gigue.
