'As it is Plenty' from the song cycle 'On this Island' is sung by the Mezzo Soprano Marianne Lihannah & Pete Rosser is the pianist. This is a live recording from a much longer ATCL Singing Diploma concert from Trinity College London.The concert was held in 'The Priory Church of the Annunciation' in Inchbrook, Stroud.
‘As it is Plenty’.
When a young Britten composed this cabaret song, it was a very new thing for a classical composer to experiment with jazz and blues influences as heard in this song.
The words are by Britten's poet friend; the famous W. H. Auden.
Both Britten and Auden had learnt satire as the main weapon to cope with their authoritarian boarding school years.
Auden’s words condemn false values with razor-sharp wit and heavy irony. Musically this irony is heard in the jerky rhythms ending in rests.
