about

The mezzo soprano Marianne Lihannah sings 'A Charm' which is from the song cycle called 'A Charm of Lullabies'. Pete Rosser is the pianist.
This is a Live Recording from an ATCL Diploma Concert in Singing from Trinity College London.

This song highlights one of Britten's central concerns; namely that the 'gaining of experience' leads to the 'destruction of innocense'.
A mad nursemaid/exasperated mother threathens the children with 'hell-fire and damnation' to send them 'to sleep'. Yet it’s exaggerated example makes it comical in all it’s seriousness.
The words are by Thomas Randolph and although it is a 'so-called' lullaby it resembles more a 'Mad Song'. 'A Mad Song' is actually a genre - they were 'Miniature Baroque Cantatas' with alternating sections of varying mood and tempo reflecting passionate delusions.
Britten actually wrote this song cycle for Mezzo Soprano and not for Peter Pears' voice, whose voice he usually composed for.
