'Absence' is sung by the mezzo soprano Marianne Lihannah and Pete Rosser is the pianist. It is a live recording from Marianne's recital diploma concert, held in 'The Priory Church of the Annunciation' in Inchbrook.

'Absence' is an extremely romantic song with repeated calls intended to reach the ears of the deserted lover.
Berlioz was a great innovator and super-sensitive to orchestral colours. The orchestral version of 'Les Nuits d'Ete' is considered one of the finest examples of the genre the 'Orchestral Song'.

Berlioz‘s ‘romances’ and ‘melodies’ – in particular ‘Les Nuits d’été’ occupy a key position in the historiography of French song. Berlioz, the ‘innovator’ and ‘renovator’ of so much French music, has been seen as a composer whose various accomplishments include the transformation of the ‘romance’ into a serious form on the model of the German Lied. The notion that Berlioz has been seen as the creator of the ideal romantic song has arisen from this song cycle in particular, where ‘Absence’ comes from.
This whole song-cycle has been interpreted as reflecting the breakdown of Berlioz marriage to Harriet Smithson and his turn towards a future with his mistress Marie Récio. Later on Berlioz re-worked this song as the first of the whole cycle for orchestra fpr performance by his by then, second wife Marie Récio
