about

This is a masterpiece by the great 20th C composer Berio, who broke musical language radically in a modernist way and influenced many composers.
His incredible musical imagination – rich harmonies and subtle rhythms, is reflected in this song.
The text is in Medieval Italian.
It is an extremely passionate love song with incredible drama.
Consecutive long rezitative-like passages which echo a deep understanding of the composer Monteverdi, are interspersed with fast sections evoking Bulgarian women dancing and Russian folk song. It is simultaneously 'Early Baroque' and yet also very 'Contemporary'.

Berio once said, he didn't like music that confirms what already has been stated and proved. "I like to explore new things and I am interested in creating music, where music from different ages and cultures can 'talk' to eachother". The latter applies to this passionate masterpiece of a love song - dedicated to and composed for the wonderful American Mezzo Soprano Cathy Berberian's voice, who also became his first wife.

This is a live recording from Marianne Lihannah's ATCL diploma concert in singing. Pete Rosser is the pianist.
