about

'Ave Maria' (Hail mary) by Schubert (1797-1828)
The Latin words added to this song were not the original words that inspired Schubert. Written in 1825 it was an instant succes. In a letter to his parents, Schubert wrote about his 'Ave Maria': "It seems to touch all hearts and inspires a feeling of devotion. I believe the reason is that I never force myself to be devout and never compose hymns or prayers of that sort except when the mood takes me; but then it is usually the right and true devotion".

lyrics

A translation of the famous Latin text is as follows:

Hail Mary, full of grace!
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Hail Mary, Mother of God!
Pray for us sinners!
Now, and in the hour of our death.
